About St Mary's Church
This great church enshrines much of the history of England and has architectural beauty and significance. In 1123 Robert de Newburgh, Earl of Warwick, founded St. Mary's on it's present site. Part of the Norman building can be seen from the crypt. Parts of the church were rebuilt in the 14th century and represent one of the peaks of English Gothic architecture. The Beauchamp chapel was built in the 15th century to house the tomb of Richard Beauchamp. The nave and tower were destroyed by fire in 1694 and the rebuilding was completed in 1704. The tower still stands as a landmark overlooking the town and surrounding countryside. The College Garden: A little lane runs down the side of the churchyard, rejoicing in the name of The Tink-a-Tank, where walkers were shaded from the sun by the high walls and pleached lime trees planted in 1742. Off the lane, through an iron gate in the wall behind the churchyard, is the delightful retreat of the tiny garden, named for the mediaeval college of Vicars Choral. Open at most times during daylight, it forms a quiet refuge from the bustle of the town and a wonderful place from which to admire the church.
